I have a background in mathematics, writing, and educational technology and an excellent teaching record, both in traditional and online content delivery, for colleges and industry. I have designed a complete undergraduate mathematics program and have a substantial publishing record, including mathematical research, an innovative textbook, and computer-aided instruction.
Mathematics is vital, not only because students must compete in the global marketplace. It is core to our intellectual heritage, representing 5000 years of progress from many cultures. It is supremely useful, and has an austere beauty. Through mathematics, students can learn how to submit arguments to rigorous testing, a necessity for effective citizenship. Properly used, technology such as Internet searching, on-line discussion groups, intelligent tutors, special purpose educational software, and general purpose software such as spreadsheets and GIS can greatly expand mathematical understanding. I have dedicated much of my professional life to finding effective ways to use technology to teach mathematics.
